Project Safe Place

This organization started in Louisville (my hometown) and now has chapters all over the country. It provides safe harbor and transportation to shelters for teenage runaways. Most shelters do not have names that are easy to look up (you can't just look up "teenage shelter" in the phone book, although these days you could Google it) so teens end up on the street with no idea where to go.

This organization taps businesses and puts big "safe place" signs in their windows. The employees are trained to call the shelter; the shelter dispatches trained volunteers (like me) to pick up the runaway and either take them back home, if they like, or to the local shelter. And the shelters work with the entire family to fix the dysfunction, if possible. Way back in the late 80's, I worked on their logo, initial branding, and marketing materials. I've watched them grow from a local idea to an important, national charity.

Research has shown that these children with parents in prison are five times more likely to end up in prison themselves. AIM is the only nonprofit in Georgia whose sole mission is to provide programs and services to inspire these children to become successful adults and reduce the chance that they will turn to crime.
